Moving home and DGT: two addresses worth checking
One “address changed” tick does not explain which records were updated. A practical plan for checking two address tasks and the documents confirming completion.

Neutral AI-generated editorial illustration: symbolic house keys, a car and two address-check sheets. This is not an official DGT document, an image of real personal data or confirmation of a completed procedure.
After moving home, it is easy to tick one box saying “address changed” and put the document folder away. For a car owner, however, that note is too vague. One record concerns where notifications should be sent to a person; another concerns an address associated with a particular vehicle. The practical aim is not to carry out as many actions as possible in succession, but to understand exactly which details changed and what confirms this.
This article concerns moving within Spain and managing DGT address details. It does not replace instructions on residence registration, determine tax residence or describe importing a foreign car. Below is an editorial method for organising documents and checking the outcome. Check the requirements for your particular application on the official page immediately before submitting it, especially if a representative is acting, a company owns the vehicle or the circumstances differ from an ordinary move by a private individual.
Two addresses: understand their purposes first
On the DGT page about moving home within Spain, updated on 25 June 2026, the contact address for notifications and the tax address of vehicles are identified separately. The first is used to contact a person. The second relates to the vehicle record; when moving to another municipality, DGT specifically draws attention to changing it. These are not two names for one universal housing record.
For your own folder, two clear lines are useful: “My DGT notification address” and “Tax address of the car with registration number …”. If there are several cars, repeat the second type of line for each one. This is not an official form, but a safeguard against an everyday mistake: completing an action in your personal details and forgetting the vehicles, or changing one car’s details while assuming all the others were included.
Do not confuse this list with your shopping delivery address, the address on an insurance policy or the contact details held by a residential complex’s service company. Even if every document names the same street, proof that one set of details was updated does not establish the outcome for another. Several short, verifiable tasks are more useful than one sweeping line saying “told everyone the new address”.
What the official pages confirm
The DGT page on the notification address explains how to view and change it and obtain confirmation after the online procedure. DGT expressly clarifies that this document confirms notification of an address change specifically to DGT; it does not certify where you live. The page also explains that both address actions may be available through one service. Two distinct matters to check therefore do not necessarily mean two separate visits or two different online sessions.
The instructions on a vehicle’s tax address link it to the municipal vehicle tax IVTM and describe viewing vehicle details in miDGT. They cover vehicle selection, special cases and applications through the registry. DGT warns that registry submission does not mean automatic completion. The routes for individuals and legal entities may differ. This article does not calculate tax, determine when a liability arises or promise a processing time.
All three pages were read on 29 October 2026. The overview page includes technical price placeholders such as “XX,XX€”; these must not be treated as a tariff. We deliberately do not reproduce amounts or opening hours here. The DGT instructions read for changing the notification address and the vehicle’s tax address state a deadline of 15 days after an address change; applicability to special circumstances should be checked separately. Open the current instructions for your route promptly after moving and clarify the requirements if your circumstances are ambiguous.
Start with a short map of your situation
Before filling in a form, write down what actually happened: whether the address changed within the same municipality or the home is in another one; who owns each car; and whether the person is acting directly or through a representative. Separately note unusual circumstances you have not yet clarified. Do not turn an assumption into a settled answer: if you are unsure which municipality an address belongs to, check documents and official information rather than the name of a resort area.
It helps to distinguish buying property from moving home. The keys to a second home do not by themselves establish which address action your circumstances require. If you use an apartment for temporary visits, do not enter its address in every field merely because you now own it. Put a question to DGT or a competent adviser describing how you actually use the home, rather than adjusting the facts to fit a convenient online form.
In a family folder, do not merge different owners under one surname. One person may manage household paperwork while the vehicle is registered to another. For organising the work, these are different participants. The internal list should show who checks their own details and who is entitled to submit a particular application; a family arrangement does not replace the official procedure’s representation requirements.
Prepare the source details without unnecessarily sharing documents
Gather documents that let you check the spelling of the name, the owner’s identifier, the vehicle registration number and the new address without guessing. This is a suggestion for personal preparation, not a claim that every such document must be uploaded. Take the list of attachments only from the instructions for your chosen application method. Do not attach the full property purchase contract “just to be safe” if the procedure does not require it.
Copy the building number, block, staircase, floor, door, postcode and municipality particularly carefully wherever those elements apply. Your checklist can hold one verified version of the address and record discrepancies found in documents. If official records differ, do not invent a compromise spelling. First establish the correct value for the relevant field and keep the answer.
Do not give a password, certificate or one-time code to someone helping translate the interface. Help understanding a question and acting on your behalf are different things. If you choose a representative, agree on an officially permitted route and the scope of their authority. Messages with a helper can discuss the task itself; send identity-document copies and full registration details only when and in the manner genuinely necessary.
Choose the route for your circumstances, not out of habit
Open the official page for the required change and read the sections on applicants, documents and submission methods. Do not start with a saved photo of someone else’s step-by-step guide: button names, form contents or available channels may have changed. If the instructions identify a special case, clarify it first. Do not try to obtain the desired outcome through a general form while concealing a circumstance for which another route is provided.
For convenience, write down four questions: which record am I changing; for which person or vehicle; through which official channel; and what confirmation do I expect? If you intend to complete both address actions together, add a fifth: where will the outcome show that both were covered? This preparation is more useful than counting buttons in advance or planning an exact duration for the application.
If you choose a municipal channel, check whether that particular service carries out the required DGT action and on what terms. Do not regard every town-hall procedure as equivalent to changing vehicle details. Name the service explicitly rather than using a general phrase such as “update my residence registration”: the employee needs to understand whether you are asking about the DGT notification address, the car’s tax address or both.
Keep track of what is being changed during submission
Before confirming, compare the entered details with your prepared list. Pay particular attention to the selected vehicles: logging into a service does not prove that a change covers the entire family fleet. If the interface offers a selection, read it literally. Do not include another owner’s car or change unfamiliar details at the same time to “put everything in order”.
Record actual events in simple terms: “form filled in”, “application sent”, “confirmation received”, “current details checked”. It is useful to distinguish these states even in a household note. An open form or a screen before the final action does not confirm submission. A reference number helps locate the case, but by itself does not explain which fields have already been updated.
If an error occurs or the connection drops, do not repeat the action blindly. First check whether an application entry or confirmation has appeared in the place provided by the service. Save the error text without unnecessary personal data and clarify the status through an official channel. The aim is to understand one action, not create several applications that make the sequence of changes harder to follow.
Keep the evidence, then check the actual result
A useful household folder contains the original task, the confirmation received and a brief record of the subsequent check. Give the file a clear name: date, type of change and an owner or vehicle label without excessive personal data. Do not save documents containing full identifying details in a shared family chat if it is enough to say the procedure is complete and where the original is stored.
Read the confirmation as a document, not as a green tick. Check whether it concerns submission or a completed change; which details and vehicles it lists; and whether further actions are required. If the text is unclear, do not draw a conclusion from the single word “accepted”. You can ask the service: “Does this document confirm the completed change or only receipt of my application?”
After processing, separately check the current notification address and each car’s details in the available official service. Compare the result with your task map. If a section is unavailable, record precisely that rather than “everything done”. If something differs, save the check date and tell the service which specific field appears incorrect. Do not resend the entire document package until you understand what is needed to correct it.
How to ask a question that helps resolve the issue
A good enquiry is short and specific: “I have moved home. I want to check my notification address and the car’s tax address. An application was submitted through this official route and I have confirmation. The current details show this discrepancy. How can I check the status and what step is needed?” Add registration and personal details through a secure channel only to the extent needed to identify the application.
If the problem concerns a tax assessment, separate it from a technical question about an address record. First establish which details are actually recorded and which application was completed, then discuss the specific document with the competent service. It is not possible to promise that one address correction will automatically cancel an earlier assessment, suspend a deadline on a notification received or settle a dispute. Do not postpone dealing with an official document already received while waiting for a profile change.
For a complex situation, one chronology is useful: the actual change in circumstances, applications, replies and discrepancies discovered. It helps a specialist understand the sequence without guessing. Do not replace it with a folder of disconnected screenshots. Keep the originals and prepare a concise explanation for the initial enquiry without publishing sensitive data.
When the household task can be considered closed
The editorial completion criterion is simple: you understand both addresses’ purposes, know which records should have changed, have kept confirmation of the required action and checked the available outcome. For several cars, record the result for each and list unresolved questions separately. This is not a legal certificate or a guarantee that moving has no other administrative consequences—just a careful way not to lose an important part of the work.
The main benefit appears later when you need to answer “what exactly did we change?” quickly. Instead of a memory of a visit or an app login, you have a clear chain: task, action, document, check. It does not replace official requirements, but makes the practical organisation of a move much clearer and helps identify unfinished steps in time.
